Parents/guardians and caregiviers (and even the children themselves) often have lots of questions when making a desicion about therapeutic treatment options.

More than anything, we are here to assist you and make you feel comfortable when considering Brooklawn.

Below is a list of the questions we are most frequently asked.

How long will I stay at Brooklawn?
Each resident’s stay is individualized for their specific needs. A stay at Brooklawn may range from 1-12 months.

What can I bring with me to Brooklawn?
You may bring casual clothing that is appropriate for season and other personal belongings that may not be harmful to yourself and others. Please ask the Admissions Coordinator about specific items that are allowed at Brooklawn.

Will I miss school while I’m at Brooklawn?
No, Brooklawn has it’s own on-site school run in cooperation with the Jefferson County Public Schools. Some of our residents attend off-campus public school while at Brooklawn. You may also pursue a GED at Brooklawn.

What are the kids like at Brooklawn?
They are just like you - kids who have had previous psychiatric or behavioral problems.

Can my family visit me or call me at Brooklawn?
Yes! Family involvement in treatment is highly encouraged at Brooklawn. You will have family therapy and may go out on passes with your family as you progress in treatment.

Will my child be safe and treated by the best professionals?
Yes! Brooklawn has an outstanding record for resident safety and is one of the few residential providers to have only Master’s Level therapists working with residents as primary therapists.

Is treatment at Brooklawn effective?
Yes! Brooklawn’s treatment outcomes are among the best in the State of Kentucky.

Is treatment at Brooklawn covered by insurance?
Although the Residential setting has been proven to be one of the most clinically effective settings for treatment, and often prevents the necessity for an inpatient hospitalization, treatment at Brooklawn may or may not be covered by your insurance carrier. Brooklawn is willing to assist you in obtaining insurance reimbursement for treatment. However, the admitting family member or guardian is responsible for payment if not covered by insurance.

What is a typical day like for residents at Brooklawn?
Residents at Brooklawn have a full day of therapies, school, and activities. Brooklawn’s schedule includes a healthy mix of educational and recreational activities in addition to its’ therapeutic clinical program. Daily schedules are posted in each cottage.

What kind of activities will I be doing at Brooklawn?
Brooklawn provides indoor, outdoor, and off-campus activity programs. Brooklawn has several of its’ own sports leagues including basketball, baseball, and soccer. Residents go off-campus for both physical and cultural outings. In-cottage activities include movies and video games.

What is the food like at Brooklawn?
Brooklawn serves three meals and two snacks a day. Meals are prepared and served in our cafeteria or in our cottages which have full kitchens. A Registered Dietitian constructs and approves our menus to insure balanced nutrition, and to see that the needs of residents on special diets are met.

What will be expected of me as a resident?
You will be expected to actively participate in treatment and in the development of your treatment plan. You will be expected to keep up good daily hygiene, and to be properly dressed. You will be expected to keep your room and your cottage clean. You will be expected to treat other residents and staff members with respect, and to behave appropriately. You will be expected not to harm yourself or others.

What kind of therapy is provided?
Brooklawn has an intensive therapy program which includes individual, group, and family therapies. Each resident works with their primary therapist for individual and family therapy, but also has the benefit of working with other therapist in specialized group therapies that include substance abuse/dependency, trauma, and sexual reactive disorders. All therapists at Brooklawn are Master’s Level. Psychological testing and evaluation is also available at Brooklawn.

Can we go shopping at Brooklawn?
Yes, as you progress in treatment you will be allowed to go on supervised shopping trips.

Is there access to computers at Brooklawn?
Yes, Brooklawn’s school has a computer lab, however you will not be able to access the internet. Your primary therapist can assist you with necessary internet communications.
