Brooklawn's Horizons of Hope Capital Campaign

The Projects

Community Homes for
Children and Youth

The Capital Campaign will underwrite the costs for a collaborative effort with Maryhurst to find foster care and adoptive homes for Brooklawn residents, and to fund the purchase of two houses to serve as community-based group homes for older youth transitioning to independent living.

Elementary Campus and Treatment Program for Girls

Brooklawn has received authorization to open the first intense treatment program (PRTF) for young girls in the state. Brooklawn will also add a step down program for these girls. To facilitate this new initiative, a new cottage will be constructed for girls, and an adjacent cottage converted to girls. Together these two cottages will provide space for 20 girls.

Provision will be made to separate the younger grade school age children from the teenage students in our upper school. Campaign funds will allow the south half of our campus to be dedicated to the use of the younger children (5 to 11 years of age). Anchoring the new children’s campus will be an elementary school building and playground. To make way for the conversion of a residence into the elementary school, and switching another cottage to girls, two new cottages for boys will be constructed.

Remodeling and Equipping the Older Facilities on Brooklawn’s Campus

Oak and Sycamore Halls will be reconfigured to include a new kitchen and separate dining rooms. Two large multi-person bathrooms will be subdivided into private bathrooms, with adjacent laundry and linen storage areas. An additional private bathroom will also be provided on each Hall. All of the other residences on campus will receive major repairs and decorating to enhance the living environments. Other improvements include enlarging and equipping the cafeteria kitchen, updating our phone system and expanding the computer network to support the overall program growth.

Building a Horticulture Center, Support Facility, and Infrastructure

A Horticulture Education Center including a classroom and greenhouse will be built to provide a well equipped learning environment for the vocational education program currently housed in a basement room. The Horticulture Center will be surrounded by gardens and adjacent to an outdoor environmental classroom. A 2,000 square foot, pre-engineered, metal central supplies/storage building will be constructed near the rear of campus. It will include a loading dock for easier handling of bulky items. Security will be enhanced by attractive fencing and a gate at the main entrance that can be closed at night. Roads and parking will be upgraded.

Visionary Needs

  • Endowment: Visionary needs include a $255,000 addition to our endowment to help offset the utility expenses related to the new facilities both on and off campus.
  • Apartment Building: Purchase a four plex apartment building for supervised transition to independent living.
  • Water Play Park: A water play park with fountains and spray nozzles for hot summer days. SCL Community Housing: Older youth with mental retardation or other limitations will be provided supported housing into adulthood to prevent them from becoming homeless.
  • Renovation of Ball Fields: Drainage will be improved and fields re-seeded.
