Brooklawn's Horizons of Hope Capital Campaign

The Needs

Alternative Homes

Tragically, too many of the children and youth who successfully progress through treatment at Brooklawn and are ready for discharge, have no place to go. Most of these unwanted children are wards of the state whose parental rights have been terminated.

Because of their histories or age, these children are frequently passed over for foster home or adoptive placements; they languish in care and often regress.

Waiting Lists

The lack of placement options for children who are ready to leave has created a “bottleneck” resulting in long lists of children accepted for admission, but waiting for a bed to become available.

Treatment for Young Girls

Currently there is no intense treatment (PRTF) program in Kentucky for girls ages 6 to 11. As a result, young girls are being kept in psychiatric hospitals for lack of placement options.

Children’s Campus: As Brooklawn serves more kindergarten and grade school age children, and as we plan for the addition of young girls to the campus, provisions need to be made to separate these younger children from our teenage residents. Establishing a separate elementary school building and construction of additional cottage space for the younger children are a priority.

Renovation of Older Buildings

All of the older residences on campus need major renovation, particularly the two residential units located in the original dormitory building constructed over 45 years ago. The cafeteria kitchen which serves over twice as many students as it was designed to accommodate needs to be both expanded and renovated.

Support Facilities

The new Horticulture Program is currently housed in old garage space in the dormitory basement awaiting the construction of an appropriate facility. Storage space is at a premium everywhere on campus, complicating supply warehousing and the receipt of donated goods.
