Brooklawn honors its volunteers
The love, compassion, time and talents of all of our volunteers truly make a difference to children of Brooklawn! And it was in that spirit that Brooklawn held its recent Volunteer Appreciation dinner.

Along with some great food, prepared by our Dietary department, volunteers were able to walk around and visit booths set up to showcase the many activities and programs they so richly help support through their efforts.
But the highlight of the evening was the handing out of Brooklawn’s Star Volunteer Awards. Among the recipients were:
Kosair Charities

Lenny Sewell, Kosair Charities’ President and J. Memory Townsend, Kosair Charities Board Member accepted a Brooklawn Star Volunteer Award at Brooklawn’s Annual Volunteer Appreciation event on May 15. Brooklawn residents, along with other children in the community, benefit from activities throughout the year hosted and sponsored by Kosair Charities. The staff and volunteers of Kosair Charities host an annual ride on the Belle of Louisville, a Halloween Party at the Louisville Zoo, and a Christmas Party featuring Santa Claus and his friends. And of course, the Kosair Shrine Circus is a big hit for kids of all ages, including the children of Brooklawn.
As the leadership giver of Brooklawn’s “Horizon of Hope” Capital Campaign, the new children’s campus at Brooklawn will be named in honor of Kosair Charities. The new “campus within a campus” will feature Kentucky’s only intense treatment program for girls, ages 6 to 11. The younger children will have their own school, playground and splash park situated on the south half of Brooklawn’s 28-acre campus.
Janet Brewster

Janet Brewster also received a “Star Volunteer” award. Janet is in her second year as a tutor in Mrs. Winters’ class, providing the boys one-on-one attention throughout the day. Janet, an accomplished flautist, taught one of the Brooklawn boys to play the flute. And Janet and her husband Greg chaired the Brooklawn festival for many years. Director of Community Involvement Missy Fountain said, “You can always count on Janet if Brooklawn needs something done.”
Ann Beckemeyer

Another of Brooklawn’s tutors Ann Beckemeyer received a “Star Volunteer” award for nine years of providing individual instruction to the boys. Ann’s weekly visits to the Brooklawn School may be the reason for the dramatic increases in reading scores of the Brooklawn students. Ann and her husband, the Rev. Harlan Beckemeyer have been longtime supporters of Brooklawn. Harlan currently serves on Brooklawn’s Board of Trustees is one of the leaders of the Endowment Task Force.
Robin Williams Brohm
Robin Williams Brohm currently serving in her seventh year as a Brooklawn board member was the final recipient of the evening to receive a “Star Volunteer” award. Robin chaired Brooklawn’s Board of Trustees in 2007, leading the effort to open our first group home. Robin has chaired both the Development and Nominating committees during her tenure. And she, while with the Williams McBride Group, created Brooklawn’s new logo and remains as our in-house “image consultant.”
