Louisville Youth Philanthropy Council chooses Brooklawn

The Louisville Youth Philanthropy Council presented Brooklawn with a $3,000 check at its first-ever Awards Celebration on March 10 at the Clifton Center. The keynote speaker for the evening was Stan Curtis, founder of USA Harvest.

The council, made up of local high school students, will help fund the expansion of Brooklawn’s “Lifebook” Program. Brooklawn therapists help re-establish children’s pasts and document their present by helping them assemble lifebooks. Many of the Brooklawn residents have dim memories of their childhood. Being removed from their home at an early age, has left them without photos, drawings, school papers, and other keepsakes. Much like scrapbooking, pages are filled with awards, self-portraits, artwork, pictures from current activities, and photos from the past if available.

The Louisville Youth Philanthropy Council recognizes the critical role that philanthropy plays in our community and personal development. The LYPC seeks to inspire young leaders in our community to commit themselves to service and the development of their skills in this area. Candy Medina, Executive Director of the Gilbert Foundation, served as community liaison to the group.

Brooklawn praises these students for their commitment to the community. Maryhurst also received a grant of $7,000 to begin a horticulture program.
