Brooklawn hosts multi-agency basketball league on campus

The chirping sounds of shoes on hardwood; cheering crowds; the unmistakable "swoosh" as the ball touches nothing but net - yes, it's basketball season in the Bluegrass.

Just like school gymnasiums all across Kentucky, Brooklawn's gymnasium is filled each week with the sounds of kids competing in basketball. The Brooklawn Basketball League began in late January with Brooklawn acting as host to several other agencies.

"We have kids coming in from Maryhurst, Bellwood, YMCA Safe Place, and Spring Meadows," said Missy Fountain, Brooklawn's Director of Community Involvement. "Those agencies will bring their teams over and we all get together and play a weekly schedule."

The league lasts a little longer than the regular basketball season culminating in April with an end-of-season tournament that's every bit as exciting for the kids as "March Madness."

"They play in an elimination tournament. The two teams who make it to the finals play in the championship game and will receive trophies," she said.

The basketball league is nothing new for Brooklawn. What is new is that all games are being played at the Brooklawn gymnasium - something that wasn't possible two years ago.

"We received a grant two years ago from the Kentucky Colonels to purchase a scoreboard and that allowed us to host games here for the first time. We played many "home" games last year," Fountain said. "This year, the other agencies called us about hosting all the games at Brooklawn. It's grown from there."

Brooklawn teams are wearing uniform shirts donated by YUM! Brands and donned with the agency mascot - the tiger.

"These leagues help not only our kids, but the other agency's kids in so many ways," Fountain said. "Beyond the basics of listening skills, teamwork, and sportsmanship, the kids are gaining some much-needed self esteem. I wish everyone could see their faces when they make a basket. It's really fun for everyone."

Brooklawn would like to thank the Honorable Order of Kentucky Colonels, YUM! Brands, our fellow agencies and all those who volunteer their time to help coach and support the Brooklawn basketball league.
